Hotel Artemis
Screen Graphics | VFX | Compositing
Hotel Artemis, a crime film set in riot-torn near-future Los Angeles, provided a unique opportunity for Cantina. Working closely with writer/director Drew Pearce, and with the post-production department housed in our Los Angeles office, our team tackled the challenge of managing and executing the entire visual effects process for the film.
Our goal was to create a fully immersive and distinct retro-futuristic design language that felt well lived-in and authentic. It was important to us that all of the CG sets, FX simulations, and FUI elements were seated within the same aesthetic and tone. Ultimately we provided on-set VFX Supervision for 33 days of shooting, and delivered over 450 VFX shots.

Hospital Curtain GUI
The hospital curtain's treatment was based on electronic "e" ink currently being used in modern day e-readers and digital signage. The design aimed to tap into a future use for the technology in real-time medical and security monitoring systems.
“We've been here for twenty two years. This hospital was built on two things: trust and rules.”

Visual Effects
In addition to design and animation, our post production contributions included CG set extensions, CG robotic arms, riot smoke, futuristic laser simulations, blood work, screen graphics, holograms, and a host of other bespoke FX simulations for technology not yet invented.
“Work with what you got, not what you hope for.”
