Motion graphics | CG | Compositing

In the fall of 2023, shortly after releasing a revamped 3d system in After Effects, Adobe reached out to Cantina with a collaboration project.

The brief was very clear. Create a robust and flexible set of 3D motion design content that can serve as both a proof of concept and marketing/demo assets highlighting the visual fidelity and streamlined workflow of combining the Substance 3D Collection, native 3D support in After Effects, and Cinema 4D. Emphasis should be placed on how Substance 3D enhances After Effects' native 3D capabilities, offering photorealistic textures, accurate recreation of real-world surfaces and objects, and a significant saving in time preparing and compositing native 3D content in After Effects. The content should be aspirational and appeal to both experienced 3D motion designers and designers just beginning their 3D journey, positioning Adobe's Substance 3D Collection as an essential tool for crafting lifelike and engaging 3D content for motion design.

Substance

The following images are taken from the presentation document at Adobe Max in 2024. Initially our efforts focused in developing a variety of model and shader assets in Substance.

There was considerable iteration between Substance and After Effects to perfect the shaders and problem solve custom looks. One such example was a faux glass shader that created a depth to the reflections and specular highlights. This was achieved by exporting 3 different shaders that had different bump and refraction qualities. These were then light and layered in After Effects to create the illusion of multiple refractions within the glass shader. Careful attention was also given to subtle bump and specular highlights to give the bottle a slightly worn look.

After Effects

Once in After Effects we created a master comp rig that contained the scene assets, camera and lighting. All of the accompanying precomps included various lighting passes, the fake ID pass and motion graphics elements were all expressioned to the master rig comp to minimize repetitive work. One of the tasks we gave ourselves was to create a piece that required no 3rd party plugins. With this in mind we built our own chroma separation preset. Rather than the humdrum red/green/blue offsets we usually see we wanted to create a preset that had an organic falloff from one separation to another. All of this was created in a color managed project using OCIO.

You can download 3 of the more complicated shots below. These include all the Substance and After effects files to create them. There might be some missing fonts depedning on your platform of choice but should work none the less.
