Ivy + Bean

Ivy + Bean is the Netflix trilogy, based on the bestselling books of the same name, about two unlikely friends, the loud and fearless Bean, and the thoughtful and quiet Ivy. Yet the two discover that an adventure can reveal that even seemingly different people can become the best of friends. We were initially approached about pitching ideas for the title sequence for the trilogy. Director Elissa Down responded to one of
our concepts related to Ivy’s treehouse so were awarded the work and quickly proceeded to dive into the technical approach to pull it off. After exploring various technical options for representing the treehouse itself along with the props related to each character, it was decided that we would create a fully CG version of the treehouse in C4D based on individual props scans.

CG Environment
Lead 3D artist Ryan Uhrich simultaneously worked on preparing the props scan models for rendering while also laying out the models in the treehouse so that Elissa could approve their positioning. Once the model placements were set, we moved into camera blocking. This process took a few weeks before finalizing the camera paths for each shot. Now the final renders in C4D began in earnest. Compositing Supervisor, Tony Lupoi, then took the CG renders and composited them into final shots, being sure to add the dust particles and god rays that Elissa was such a fan of.
Additional Shots
Once underway on the titles sequences, our scope of work was then expanded to include a variety of whimsical moments where graphics come to life on the screen such as the map of the neighborhood that magically draws on the fence or Bean’s dancing thought bubbles to name a few.
